Chain drive belongs to meshing drive with intermediate flexible parts, which has some characteristics of gear drive and belt drive. Compared with gear drive, chain drive has lower requirements for manufacturing and installation accuracy, better stress condition of sprocket teeth, certain buffering and damping performance, large center distance and light structure. Compared with the friction belt drive, the average transmission ratio of the chain drive is accurate; the transmission efficiency is slightly higher; the pull force of the chain on the shaft is smaller; under the same use conditions, the structure size is more compact; in addition, the wear and elongation of the chain is relatively slow, the tension adjustment workload is small, and it can work in harsh environmental conditions. The main disadvantages of chain drive are: it can’t keep the instantaneous transmission ratio constant; it has noise when working; it’s easy to jump teeth after wearing; it’s not suitable for the situation of small center distance and rapid reverse transmission due to space limitation.
Chain drive has a wide range of applications. Generally, chain drive can be successfully used in the transmission with large center distance, multi axis and accurate average transmission ratio, open transmission with bad environment, low speed and heavy load transmission, high speed transmission with good lubrication, etc.
According to different uses, the chain can be divided into transmission chain, conveying chain and lifting chain. In the production and application of chain, short pitch precision roller chain for transmission (roller chain for short) occupies the most important position. Generally, the transmission power of roller chain is below 100kW and the chain speed is below 15m / s. Advanced chain transmission technology can make the transmission power of high-quality roller chain reach 5000 kW and the speed can reach 35m / S; the speed of high-speed toothed chain can reach 40m / s. The efficiency of chain transmission is about 0.94-0.96 for general transmission and 0.98 for high planting transmission lubricated by circulating pressure oil supply.
